MEDAL GLORY FOR IRISH MEN’S TEAM

The fourth day of action saw the Irish Men’s Pairs and triples firstly up in quarter-final action against New Zealand and Malaysia, respectively.

First up was the triple of Stuart Bennett, Ian McClure and Marty McHugh, who turned in a top-class performance to win 14-12 against a very talented Malaysian triple. This would set up a tilt at the hosts Australia later in the day.

The Irish Pair of Adam McKeown and Gary Kelly faced the experienced Mike Grantham and Andrew Kelly from New Zealand in their quarter-final. They took control from the start and produced an excellent performance to win by four shots.

The triple then faced the very strong Australian trio of Corey Wedlock, Aaron Sherriff and Carl Healey. The Australians gained early control with a count of 5 and ran out comfortable winners in the end. The Bronze medal was some consolation for the Irish, who played very well throughout the tournament. Australia will play Scotland in tomorrow’s final.

This left the Pairs semi-final, which saw Adam and Gary play the pair from Canada skipped by Broadbeach manager Ryan Bester. The Irish pair turned in a five-star performance to win by 13 shots. They move on to tomorrow’s gold medal match at Helensvale against the hosts Australia (Aaron Teys & Aaron Wilson), who defeated Malaysia.
